What Your Job Will Be Like
We are seeking a Manager, R&D Science and Engineering to lead the new dept 08227 in SNL-CA. This department encompasses the Environmental Test Facilities (ETF) team along with the calibration services team for SNL-CA.
In this role, you will be expected to:
- Supervise and manage a multidisciplinary team of exempt and non-exempt staff within the department, including responsibilities for hiring, professional development, and performance management, all aligned with the organization's mission.
- Establish the strategic vision for the department and actively seek out new and innovative opportunities.
- Advocate for new R&D activities and initiatives that align with the department's core capabilities.
- Maintain a comprehensive understanding of safety and security as they relate to the operations and facility needs of the department.
- Promote a culture of belonging and take a proactive leadership role in fostering team-building values within the department.
- Represent the department's needs to various levels of management, as well as within internal and external program offices, focusing on facility modernization, improvements, and repairs.
- Lead continuous improvement initiatives, including the development and implementation of new technologies and processes.
- Identify and pursue strategic investments to sustain and enhance the department's infrastructure and core capabilities.
- Support the team with programmatic and technical tasks.
Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite in Livermore, CA.
Salary Range
$194,900 - $331,000
*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.
Qualifications We Require
- A Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline and eight (8) years of directly relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of directly relevant education and engineering or scientific experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform independent research and development.
- Active DOE Q-level security clearance or equivalent DoD Top Secret level security clearance
Qualifications We Desire
The ideal R&D Science and Engineering Manager candidate for Sandia National Laboratories will in addition possess the following:
- Two or more years of demonstrated leadership experience.
- A graduate degree in science or engineering (MS or Ph.D.).
- Outstanding interpersonal skills in developing trusting relationships with peers, staff, management, customers, and stakeholders.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in the development and delivery of presentations, proposals, reports and documentation.
Also, for this posting we are seeking individuals with the following experience:
- Background in Mechanical Engineering is a plus.
- Technical expertise or knowledge in structural dynamics and vibration/shock testing.
- Familiarity with calibration and metrology principles.
- Demonstrated understanding of the Nuclear Deterrence (ND) Product Realization Process.
- Proven high performance in one or more technical mission areas.
- Ability to handle sensitive information and classified materials.
- Demonstrated ability to successfully manage and complete multiple projects.
- Proven ability to deliver results, effectively manage personnel, and lead multidisciplinary teams.
- Knowledge of Sandia's safety and security rules and guidelines.
- Ability to model behaviors that align with Sandia's core values.
- Experience in leading or initiating continuous improvement activities (e.g., Lean Six Sigma events, demand planning studies, structured improvement initiatives).
- Demonstrated experience collaborating with facilities to oversee infrastructure improvements and equipment installations.
About Our Team
This new department consists of staff and technologists who were in sister departments, with the goal of enhancing and growing our capabilities in these key areas critical to the development and qualification process for ND and other programs. Additionally, our calibration team offers vital support for tools and equipment at the SNL-CA site, maintaining strong connections with the SNL-NM Primary Standards Laboratory organizations. This department will serve as the primary owner of several Vault Type Rooms (VTRs) and facilities within the SNL-CA complex.
Posting Duration

Security Clearance
Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q security clearance to start, or equivalent active security clearance with another U.S. government agency (e.g., DOD). Sandia is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.
Applicants offered employment with Sandia are subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied or terminated by DOE, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment.

NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs
If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.
