The Fullerton College Earth Sciences (ESC) Department teaches lectures, labs, and field experiences in a range of courses including oceanography, climate, geology, and weather. ESC courses serve majors in these areas, fulfill general education requirements in physical science, and expose STEM students to the Earth system and its processes.

Job Description
- Teach lecture, laboratory, and field courses in geology, earth science, meteorology, oceanography, climate science and related courses to a diverse student population.
- Participate in curriculum development and serve on department, division, college and district committees as necessary to maintain and improve the instructional program; participate in appropriate professional development activities.
- Participate in co-curricular activities, including planning, implementing, and teaching in special programs designed to support student success.
- Participate in the formulation of Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) and the Student Learning Outcomes assessment cycle.
- Maintain formal office and campus hours; participate in department and division meetings.
- Maintain current knowledge of instructional methods and new technologies pertinent to areas of assignment; learn and apply emerging technologies and advances (e.g., computer software applications) as necessary to perform duties in an efficient, organized and timely manner.
- Teach scheduled classes and perform related duties as assigned, including timely compliance with clerical and administrative responsibilities; comply with district, college and division policies in the performance of duties.
- Instruct and assist in the growth and success of a diverse population of students through careful preparation of course materials, effective teaching methodologies and informed critical feedback on assignments and discussions.
- Develop culturally relevant course content, culturally responsive pedagogical techniques, and effective practices for engaging students who are diverse and/or are students who are historically underserved. The ideal candidate should have experience in this area with African American, Latinx, Native Americans, Pacific Islanders and other disproportionately impacted students.
- Work cooperatively with staff and students.
- Evening and/or weekend assignments may be required as part of the regular contract.
Requirements
OR
Bachelor’s in geology
AND
Master’s in geography, physics, or geochemistry
OR
OR
The equivalent. Equivalent qualifications may include related education, training, employment and professional experience that would be equal to the required degree(s) and experience in this field as determined by the District Equivalency Committee.
Desirable Qualifications
- Advanced degree in Earth Science related field.
- Industry or government experience in geology.
- Experience and demonstrated excellence in teaching in post-secondary higher education.
- Experience teaching lab and field courses in geology.
- Experience or willingness to teach in different modalities, in-person, online, hybrid.
- Familiarity with the geology, oceanography, and climatology of Southern California.
- Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate Earth Science concepts to students, including experience teaching in an active and collaborative learning environment.
- Ability to develop and to maintain laboratory exercises and field study opportunities for hands-on learning in geology, working in collaboration with colleagues or lab technician support.
- Skills and experience to engage students from a broad spectrum of academic, socioeconomic, cultural, language, ability or ability status, gender identity and ethnic backgrounds.
- Proficiency in or willingness to learn current technology and software relevant to Earth Science education and research, such as GIS (Geographic Information Systems), remote sensing, and data analysis tools.
- Experience incorporating topics on environmental justice and equity.
- Experience or willingness to mentor undergraduate research or citizen science projects.
- Experience or willingness to engage in public outreach and community education initiatives related to Earth Science.
- Effective oral and written communication skills.
