Compensation: Coaching Rate: Varies on Experience ($25-$35)and Meeting Rate (Non-Session): $16.90
Hours: 0 to 19.5 hours/week regular semester (up to 40 hours/week summer)
Broad Scope and Function:
This is a part-time, temporary, non-benefited, non-student/student position. The Health Coach partners with individuals in a collaborative, client-centered process to support healthy lifestyle behaviors. Health coaches help clients increase self-awareness, identify strengths, and set realistic goals related to physical activity, stress management, nutrition habits, and overall well-being.
The Health Coach does not diagnose conditions, prescribe treatment, provide nutrition or exercise prescriptions, or perform therapy. Instead, the role is focused on motivational interviewing, behavior-change strategies, and accountability support to empower clients to take ownership of their health.
Reporting Relationship:
This position reports directly to the Assistant Director, Fitness and Wellness. The Health Coach will work closely with professional staff across multiple departments and may collaborate with fitness professionals, but remains within their defined scope of practice.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities (Include, but are not limited to)
- Conduct individual or small-group health coaching sessions focused on behavior change strategies (goal setting, reflective listening, accountability support).
- Apply effective communication skills such as motivational interviewing, open-ended questioning, affirmations, and summarizing to facilitate client self-discovery.
- Assist clients in developing achievable and measurable wellness goals related to stress management, physical activity, nutrition habits, sleep hygiene, and lifestyle balance.
- Support clients in recognizing and leveraging their strengths and internal motivations to make sustainable behavior changes.
- Refer clients to qualified professionals (personal trainers, dietitians, mental health providers, medical professionals) when needs fall outside the health coach’s scope of practice.
- Maintain professional boundaries and confidentiality, adhering to all privacy laws and WELL policies.
- Monitor client progress and adapt coaching strategies as needed while staying within scope.
- Contribute to the development and facilitation of wellness workshops, campus wellness events, or group programs.
- Attend pre-semester training and all-staff meetings throughout the semester.
- Complete bi-weekly timesheets accurately and on time.
- Respond to injuries or emergencies by activating the emergency action plan.
- Complete incident/accident reports properly.
- Support a positive and inclusive wellness culture at The WELL.
- Complete other duties as assigned by professional staff.
Administrative Duties:
- Properly manage scheduling (appointments, rescheduling, client sign-ins).
- Ensure accurate session facilitation and assist with surveys, evaluations, and feedback collection.
- Maintain organized client documentation and coaching session records in compliance with WELL policies.

Requirements
Minimum Qualifications:
- Current Health Coach certification (ACE, NBHWC-approved program, or equivalent) OR completion of a degree/major in Kinesiology, Public Health, Health Education, Nutrition, Psychology, or a related field AND a commitment to obtain certification within the first 90 days of employment.
- Previous experience working with clients in health, fitness, or wellness-related settings.
- Demonstrated knowledge of behavior change science, motivational interviewing, and goal-setting strategies.
- Ability to communicate effectively and empathetically.
- Strong interpersonal and active listening skills.
- CPR/AED and First Aid Certification (Must obtain within the first 60 days of hire).
